Greetings from the other side of Earth

Hello hello!

We're about three weeks underway here so that means we're starting to settle into a routine.  They keep us busy aboard the ship, which is actually a good thing even though it causes a lot of belly-aching from most of the guys.  We have to maintain our weapons or vehicles daily, then get classes on any range of subjects (lately it's been Arabic, patrolling, threat weapons, and country briefs), prepare our own classes to teach to the company, teach classes to my squad, work out daily, eat, get haircuts, complete assignments, and any other number of dog and pony show acts.  But like I said that while it's busy, it does help the time pass.

I found out yesterday that I won the MEU board to get a meritorious promotion to sergeant, which will probably take place on November 2nd.  That's a pretty solid deal given all of the Marines I was up against, though I think a lot of my higher-ups did some good politicking in my favor (which of course they can use to make their own fitness reports look better, which I'm fine with!)  It's a win-win.  It won't change my job any, it will just be a nice little bump to my government pay check.

We're slated to do our first training off-ship fairly soon.  It will be nice to stretch the legs on solid ground for a while in a new place, but chances are there will be some misery involved, too.  It should be a good experience overall.  Other than that, not a lot has happened (unsurprisingly).  I hope all is well back in America and I'm wishing I could be there to enjoy it with you!

Sweet Home, Chicago.

Hi, family! Starting in October you'll have seven fewer hours to drive to see yours truly.

This morning I accepted a job with The Urban Network at the University of Chicago and am moving back to the windiest of cities! (I also thought it would be good to prepare for Shopping Weekend 2012 and set up camp early.)

Virtual Guest

Hey, family!

I can't make it in person for Megan's coming nuptials, so I'm looking for volunteers to facetime me in for the ceremony. Hannah thought she might need an internet connection for the program; can anyone do it on 3G? I'd love to be able to attend from DC!

Istanbul!

Some teaser photos from my trip. It was completely awesome and you all are lucky that I managed to come back. Or not, because then you'd have a great excuse to visit Istanbul (not that its existence isn't enough). In any case, if you'd like to see more, check these out

Happy quarter of a century, Greg!

KFDX News Anchor Greg Parker will be visiting Bloomington Indiana as part of his celebration of a quarter century of life on earth.  He will join us for fine dining at Zagrebs on Thursday evening and anyone and everyone is welcome to join us!  If you can't make it, we will be having lunch after church on Sunday at Chapmans (delicious lunch/breakfast buffet). If neither of those options work for you, we'll figure something else out!  Greg would love to see you while he is in Indiana!  He leaves Sunday afternoon for a return flight to Dallas and work Monday morning! Happy Birthday, Greg!

Happy Birthday, Jill!

We've been putting Jill to work. (sorry, it's not a Deere, JB. We had to work with what we had) She seemed to enjoy it so maybe while Eric is deployed, JB can use her on the farm.
Welcome to your first official family Birthday!!

One of these boys has a birthday!

26 years ago, my favorite son was born. I was sick almost the entire pregnancy, but it was totally worth it!
