Merry Christmas!!

And a happy new year!!!

All of the pictures look great, I'm glad that things don't look to be changing all that much!! Also, a special thanks to uncle Bret for sending me all of the other pictures that didn't make the blog; I had a fantastic time looking through them and imagining all the goings-on, so thank you for including me!

Christmas here has been alright. We got a few days off, though I still managed to have a little bit of work to do each day. Last night some guys and I went to midnight mass. It felt good to be at a service even though the preacher was somewhere around Vietnamese and a little tough to understand. However, he did have some good jokes and stories.

Here are a few pictures to give you an idea of what it's like around here:

This is the Christmas tree they put up by 'the mall', which isn't too shabby! They turned the lights off about 1 second before I took the picture so I had them turn them back on for me.

This is a shot of the lights they put up down the main walkway. (Imagine some flashing/strobe patterns, too.)

Here is me in my room wishing you a Merry Christmas!!!!

And here are some pictures of the rest of the room:
As you can see it isn't too terrible, basically like a typical dorm room I suppose except ours are much cleaner due to the immaculate clean-ups we perform each Tuesday evening. That tree on top of the refrigerator is a real one that was sent to us from one of the guy's parents from Maryland. They sent over 60 of them, including lights and ornaments, so we each got one. Luckily no one's has caught on fire yet. But, sadly, the lights are battery powered and they only last about 2 hours.

So, that is Christmas in Bahrain! Tonight I have shore patrol from 10pm until 2 am. Basically it means I have to walk around as an undercover snitch and turn in people who are misbehaving.

So, I hope you all are having a wonderful day and I wish I could be there with you! Like I said, I'm more than thrilled to see that the good times are still rolling on and I can't wait to see you all again!!

Love,

Eric

Get excited for Christmas!

Cruisin 2010

Our ship docked in Cozumel. We snorkeled and saw so many fish. I felt like I was swimming in an aquarium....kinda creepy...saw barracudas, stingrays, jelly fish, and many, many other colorful fish!

The rest of Eric's Thanksgiving II

Eric had a lot of fun on the ATV.

The Marines appear to have shrunk Eric somewhat, but John and Diane still love him.

Keegan took a particular attraction to Eric-it was difficult to keep them apart.

Mid East News

Eric finally arrived in Bahrain. He said it seems very nice and there is a lot to do-if they have the time. Currently, he is 7 hours ahead of us, I don't know if it will then be 8 hours ahead after this weekend or not.
Anyway, he says he may not have time to contact us much. The time for him will go much quicker if he is busy, so I guess that is ok. As the marines say "No news is good news". His address is:

Adios!

As you've probably gathered, I'll be heading to Bahrain tomorrow for a nice long trip to the Middle East. We will have a chance to visit some other countries and do plenty of training while gone. There's even mention of us visiting Petra, which you may recall seeing during the last part of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. If I find the Holy Grail, I'll try and sneak it back for you without having the structure cave in on me.

I should have decent internet connection while gone, but there may be times when I'm out of contact for stretches of time. I will try and keep you updated on the more exciting points of my trip via the blog, though. Otherwise, I would like to say thanks for all the well wishes and prayers, it makes a world of difference. I'll be doing the same for you all as well. Be sure to take care of yourselves and have a fine time while I'm gone. I look forward to seeing you all when I get back!!

Fear and/or Sanity Restored!

Did y'all watch the rally on tv yesterday? No? Well, it was a pretty good time, let me tell you. Yusuf Islam and Ozzy Osborne and the O'Jays did an amazing mashup of train songs (Peace Train, Crazy Train, Love Train), and there was a giant puppet of Stephen Colbert, and John Legend and the Roots were the backup band. Oh! And Mavis Staples sang with Jeff Tweedy, and the Mythbuster guys had us doing the wave and measuring our collective jump on the Richter scale, and there was some pretty good comedy, too.

This is one of the more attractive photos my buddy Joonsik took of Contractor and I. We managed to find a pretty good spot about halfway (?) back (near sixth street) where the crowd actually wasn't shoulder to shoulder. My camera is still broken so I have nothing to really show for the day except an exhausted voice. And sanity, of course! Sanity won.

Lake Tahoe, Nevada

The path to our lodge

The dining hall...yummy homemade meals...I'm hoping for blueberry scones like they had last year

An outdoor amphitheater
After leaving Paoli at 2:00 am on Sunday, we finally made it here to south Lake Tahoe at about noon today (Monday)...a lesson in patience for me! It's just as beautiful as I remember it last year, although temps are a little cooler - daytime highs in the upper 40's and nightime lows in the 20's. Getting ready to drift off to sleep to the sound of the crashing waves...that sure beats the sound of traffic on North Gospel St.!
