chicago policy review

Yesterday afternoon's Launch Party marked the end of my time as the Executive Editor of the Chicago Policy Review. Boy is that a relief!

This year's edition is great (nevermind that I am slightly biased), and went off without a hitch. Or not many, anyway. Below are CJ, the Editor-in-Chief, and I with the latest issue. Oh, and you'll all probably appreciate that in his opening remarks, CJ referred to me as a prettier Dick Cheney. I'm taking that as a compliment, since he's a Republican.

Franklin, NC

We got into Franklin North Carolina last night after 24 miles. Stacy and I are staying at a hotel here resting our wet feet and getting some good rest in a hotel room. I have updated the first 2 days of our trip and i'm sending Tutu the rest of our days today.

It's been a rainy few days here in Chicago, but we still managed to get in 5 innings of baseball up at Wrigley Field last night. Nevermind that it was a Tuesday night game during the penultimate week of school -- we had a blast! 

 

I'm not sure what the rules are on rescheduling (we didn't get rainchecks when we left), but Cubs were up when they called it for rain. In fact, it was a pretty great game. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate.

Thesis!

Yesterday Meredith, Robbie and I finally defended our thesis. We're done! 

Well, except for maybe making some small edits, but our readers didn't have many comments so we're not anticipating many of those. Knock on wood. But here was are celebrating after our defense at Langiappe. It was delicious. 

Now, back to the rest of school, so we can actually finish the quarter and graduate.

Eric update

Eric finally called-at 1 am- to let us know he had arrived at boot camp safely. It was a standardized call where he inserted his name and graduation date and lasted 21 seconds (or so). In the background you could hear the DIs yelling. That's the last we will here from him, except by mail, until Aug 14.

Into the Wild....again

Tomorrow Stacy and I leave for Georgia with my dad to start our hike North to Maine. A year of prep, training, and hard work for the money we are ready to complete the AT from end to end. We will have a trail journal that will be transcribed by my dad (although i think he will need some help) and should be updated about every 5-8 days.

This is truly bound to be a great adventure with stories that will last and lifetime. We will be writing all our thoughts and taking tons of pictures to help share our journey the best we can.

Eric Joins The Few, The Proud, The Marines

Eric left at noon the go to the Indy airport. He was to report in to the USO so they can make sure he gets on his plane. He does not leave until late afternoon- somewhere between 4-8 pm. The idea is to get them to the recruit depot in San Diego really late or very early. They will be up for 36 hours before they are allowed to sleep. During this time, they are allowed to call home to let us know he arrived safely-period. The next 3 days are spent getting the hair shaved, eyes and teeth examined, clothing and toiletries, opening a base bank account, and undergoing some training and tests to make sure they can complete boot camp. Eric will also get a pair of black frame unbreakable plastic lens glasses-they call them BC glasses for birth control because no one looks attractive in them. No contacts in boot camp. On Friday, he will be put in a platoon and meet his DI for the first time. From then on, we can only guess. In 10-14 days, we will receive a post card with his address.
