Sugar Cookies
1 1/2 C Sugar
1 C Shortening
2 t Baking Powder
1 t Vanilla
4 to 5 C Flour (for stiff dough)
1 C Buttermilk OR 1 C Sweet Milk + 1 T Vinegar or Lemon Juice
2 Eggs
1/4 t Nutmeg
1 t Soda
Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs & mix well. Combine remaining dry ingredients with flour. Alternately add flour and buttermilk to creamed mixture. Add vanilla. Refrigerate, then roll out and cut. Bake on floured cookie sheet for 5-7 minutes at 375 degrees. Sprinkle with sugar before baking or ice when cool.
Makes 5-6 dozen.
